Most Utahns Secure Their Guns to Protect Their Family
Owning a gun is your right — and a responsibility Utahns take seriously. Children are naturally curious, even about guns they’ve been warned not to touch. You may feel your children are prepared, but surprises can happen. Quick access safes are one way to get easy access and keep peace of mind.

DIY Secure Storage: Quick and Easy Solutions
From $0 to $20, there are several DIY options Utahns are using to keep their families safe at home.
Modified Filing Cabinet
What to do: Add a padlock hasp (a simple hardware component used to secure a container by allowing it to be locked with a padlock) to a metal filing cabinet.
Benefits: Easy to buy, can be used with existing cabinet, looks inconspicuous, and the drawers can be organized with foam inserts for gun storage.
Build a Wooden Gun Cabinet
What to do: If you have basic woodworking skills, you can build a gun cabinet with plywood and strong joint. Reinforce it with metal sheeting for added security. There are many tutorials online.
Benefits: You can customize the look and size to fit your specific storage requirements and design style. You can choose the type of lock that best fits your needs (e.g., padlock haps, keyed deadbolt, digital keypad, fingerprint lock).
Add Trigger Locks to Each Gun
What to do: Add trigger locks to each of your guns—these are devices that block access to the trigger, typically clamping around the trigger guard to prevent it from being pulled.
Benefits: Trigger locks are easy to purchase, and are often included free with new guns, and no installation is required. However they don’t prevent theft and can be bypassed more easily than safes.

Why Do Parents Lock Up Their Guns?
Parents often worry a lot about school shootings. But the fact is, 1 in 2 children who die in an unintentional shooting are shot at home.
Children under 5 and ages 14 to 17 are at highest risk. Studies show kids are naturally curious, even about a gun they’ve been warned not to touch.
For the last 10 years, Utah’s youth suicide rates have been higher than the national rate. Most families think it could never happen to them. Safe storage can make a difference.
